Introduction
River Cleanup has been active in Cameroon since 2020 and have seen our impact grow over the years. By connecting with many volunteers, associations and communities we were able to raise awareness on plastic pollution and spark the transition to a better tomorrow. .Β
Our current goal is to validate the Clean River Model in Douala and show it actively leads to plastic-free rivers.
Our Clean River Model
The Clean River Model is our open-source theory of change for plastic-free rivers. It is comprised of three pillars and three enables. Through this model we aim to turn off the tap on new plastic pollution and clean up existing plastic pollution most effectively and cost-efficiently. Below you can find out how we implement our Clean River Model in Indonesia. For more information on the model, visit the Clean River Model page.

Empower people
We organize monthlyΒ River Cleanup DaysΒ to raise awareness about plastic pollution and encourage community action. We also take part in international events likeΒ World Environment DayΒ andΒ World Cleanup Day.
Although we didnβt run theΒ school programΒ this year, it was active in the past two yearsβengaging students and teachers as ambassadors to collect plastic and reduce waste.
We are also working withΒ community leadersβincluding CBO leaders and eldersβto build local ownership. Weβve already collected key lessons from three communities on this community-led approach.

Prevent pollution
Weβve deployedΒ EcoBinsΒ in schools (as part of the school program). Even though the program didnβt run this year, schools are still using the bins, and we continue collecting the waste.
Materials areΒ sorted at our MRFΒ (Material Recovery Facility) and then sold to recyclers for processing.

Accelerate change
We are currently gatheringΒ data and insightsΒ from assessments to inform authorities about pollution sources. We also engage them during cleanup events and when deploying EcoBins to gain their support and approval.

Assessment
Weβre conducting aΒ baseline assessmentΒ across three rivers in our action zone. This includes stakeholder analysis, identifying plastic leakage characteristics, and measuring plastic volume. These help us understand root causes, river conditions, and existing interventions.

Planning & financing
Based on the assessment, weβre developing an action plan (currently ongoing) and settingΒ KPIsΒ to monitor and evaluate progress.

Monitoring & evaluation
We focus on tracking the progress and effectiveness of the Clean River Model interventions by regularly monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) and evaluating outcomes against established baselines.
